To determine the version of Word, or any Office product, you're using go to File -> Account. It will show you the general Office product information in the top right. If you look down from there you'll see a section called About ...
which contains the actual build and version information.
As for taking up more room, the text is automatically adjusted to fit on the paper size given and taking into account the general expected margin of the page for printing. If you want to change this then change the indentation of the text. The default indentation is 0. If the value is negative then it takes up more space on the left/right/top/bottom. Note that this may cause the actual printed content to be cut off, depending on your printer.
To easily access and change this information then go to the View tab and enable the Ruler. Then you can adjust the ruler in the document directly rather than editing values in a textbox to get better accuracy.
